The Republic of Ghana is a country in West Africa, on the Gulf of Guinea.

It has an area of 92,100 square miles (238,537 square kilometers).

The terrain of Ghana consists of low plateaus and plains.

Ghana is covered in topical rainforest and tropical savanna.

Lake Volta, an artificial lake, and the Volta basin are in eastern Ghana. Lake Volta was created when the Volta River was dammed. This lake provides a link between the coast and the northern part of Ghana, which is drier. It provides northern Ghana with fresh water for irrigation, for fisheries and for drinking.

Accra is the capital of Ghana.

23,837,000 people live in Ghana.

49% are Akan, 17% are Mole-Dagbani, 13% are Ewe, 8% are Ga or Ga-Adangbe and 4% are Guan.

English is Ghana's official languages. Other languages spoken include Twi, Ewe, Ga, Fanti, Gurma, Adangbe and Dagbani.

69% of the people are Christian, 16% are Muslim and 9% practice traditional religions.

Most of them live in the south, where there is the most rainfall.

About three fourths of the workforce are involved in agriculture.

Major exports include gold, bauxite, manganese ore, timber and cocoa.

Ghana has a presidential system of government.

It is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.

The official currency is the cedi, which equals 100 pesewas.
