The Kingdom of Morocco is a country in northwest Africa. Morocco has coasts on the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

It has an area of 172,414 square miles (446,550 square kilometers).

The climate in northern and western Morocco is mild and the soil here is fertile.

South of the Atlas Mountains, which run across a large portion of Morocco, the land is arid.

The Tell Atlas Mountains, a northern range of the Atlas Mountains, run through Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia.

These mountains are still being formed, causing frequent earth tremors.

Further south in Morocco are the High Atlas Mountains.

The highest mountain in Morocco is Jebel Toubkal, in the High Atlas range. It is 13,665 feet (4,165 meters) high.

The Atlas Mountains are part of a system of fold mountains that also runs through a large part of southern Europe.

South of the Atlas Mountains, Morocco has an arid climate.

Rabat is the capital of Morocco.

31,993,000 people live in Morocco. Most of them live along the Atlantic coast.

70% of the population is Arab, 29% is Berber and 1% is European.

Arabic is the official language. Tamazight, Spanish and French are also spoken.

99% of the people are Muslim, mostly Sunni Muslim.

Tourism, agriculture, phosphate mining, textiles, chemicals and food processing are important industries.

Morocco has a mixed monarchical-parliamentary system of government.

The official currency of Morocco is the dirham, which equals 100 centimes.
