Sudan - Tourism and Travel



Sudan is located in northeast Africa, on the Red Sea.

Since July 2011, Sudan has consisted of two independent nations, the Republic of Sudan, or North Sudan, and the Republic of South Sudan, or South Sudan. South Sudan gained its independence after a long Civil War, which began in 1983.

Before the breakup of Sudan, it was the largest country in Africa, with a total area of 967,500 miles (2,506,813 kilometers).

Sudan is located in the basin of the upper Nile.

The Atbarah River in northern Sudan is a tributary of the Nile.

Sudan has desert in the north and wetland in the south.

There are mountains in the south, the west and the northeast.

The climate is hot and dry. It rains lightly in the summer, but sometimes droughts occur.

The Sudd, a region of tropical swampland in South Sudan, sometimes receives more than 40 inches (1,000 millimeters) of rain in one year.

Khartoum is the capital of North Sudan and Juba is the provisional capital of South Sudan.

North Sudan has a population of about 37 million and South Sudan has a population of about 8 million.

Most of the people in Sudan live along the Nile valley.

English and Arabic are the official languages of both North and South Sudan.

Most of the people of North Sudan are Sunni Muslim, while the most of the people of South Sudan are either Christian or practice traditional religions.

The majority of the workforce in Sudan is involved in agriculture.

Sudan has reserves of oil, three fourths of which are in South Sudan.

The Sudanese pounds is the official currency of North Sudan and South Sudan.
