The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is a small country in western Europe. It is a landlocked country and has borders with Germany, Belgium and France.

It has an area of 998 square miles (2,586 square kilometers) and a population of 486,000.

Luxembourg is an important center for international banking. There are more than 160 banks in the capital, Luxembourg City, alone.

Many other foreign companies also have headquarters in Luxembourg.

Iron, steel, chemicals, textiles and food products are important industries.

Luxembourg is the home of the European Court of Justice.

The northern part of Luxembourg includes part of the hilly, forested Ardennes region, which stretches into France and Belgium.

The Ardennes began to be formed 220 million years ago, when the land was uplifted and folded, creating a mountain range. As time has passed, the land has been reduced to a plateau that is relatively level.

There are rolling pastures in southern Luxembourg.

Most of the town, farms and industry are in the south.

Part of the Rhine River basin is in Luxembourg.

62% of the people who live in Luxembourg are Luxembourgers, and the rest are foreign residents.

Official languages are Luxembourgish, German and French.

97% of the people are Roman Catholic. There are also Protestants, members of the Christian Orthodox Church and Jews.

Luxembourg has a parliamentary system of government.

The euro is Luxembourg's official currency.
