The Republic of Montenegro is a country in Europe, on the Adriatic coast. Montenegro is very mountainous. The Dinaric Alps run through Montenegro.

It has an area of 5,333 miles (13,812 square kilometers.)

The capital is Podgorica.

The Tara River is an important river. It flows into the Drina River, which is a tributary of the Sava River, which is a tributary of the Danube.

There are many deep gorges along the Tara.

The Tara River Gorge, which is 51 miles (82 kilometers) long and 3,280 feet (1,000 meters) deep at its deepest point, is the deepest.

White water rafting along the river is a popular activity.

Because it is so isolated, many rare animals and plants live along the Tara River. The area is a national park.

The climate in Montenegro is Mediterranean. Summers are hot and dry, and winters are mild.

Montenegro has many vineyards.

624,000 people live in Montenegro.

43% are Montenegrin, 32% are Serbian, 8% are Bosniak and 5% are Albanian.

Montenegrin is the official language. Serbian, Bosniak, Albanian and Croatian are also spoken.

74% of the people are Christian Orthodox, 18% are Muslim and 4% are Roman Catholic.

Montenegro has a parliamentary system of government.

It became an independent nation in June 2006, when it split from the former union of Serbia and Montenegro, which itself was once part of Yugoslavia.

In December 2010, Montenegro became a candidate for entry into the European Union. Montenegro uses the euro as its official currency.
