Romania is a country on the northwestern coast of the Black Sea, in eastern Europe.

It has an area of 91,699 square miles (237,500 square kilometers).

The Danube River is on the border between Romania and Bulgaria.

In the center of Romania is the Transylvanian Basin. Mountains separate it from planes in the south and east and from the Danube delta.

The Transylvanian Alps, in the southern Carpathian Mountains, stretch across southwestern Romania for 170 miles (274 kilometers).

Romania has a continental climate.

The capital is Bucharest.

Romania has a population of 21,275,000.

Most of the people live on the plains.

89% of the people are Romanian, 7% are Magyar and 2% are Roma.

Romanian is the official language Hungarian (or Magyar), Romani and German are also spoken.

97% of the population is Romanian Orthodox, 5% are Roman Catholic, 4% are Protestant, 1% are Greek Orthodox and 1% are Greek Catholic.

Romania has reserves of oil, natural gas, gold, silver, zinc and lead.

There are large mineral deposits in the Apuseni Mountains in the western Carpathians.

More than one third of the workforce works in agriculture.

Grains, vegetables and sunflowers are important crops.

There are many vineyards. Romanian wine is known for its high quality.

Important exports are mineral products, textiles, footwear, machinery and chemicals.

Oil, iron and steel are imported for use in industry.

Romania has a presidential system of the government.

It is a member of the European Union, but does not use the euro. The official currency of Romania is the leu, which equals 100 bani.
