Transnistria, also known as Trans-Dniester, is a region in eastern Moldova, near the border with Ukraine. It lies to the east of the Dniester (or Nistru) River.
It has an area of 1,607 square miles (4,163 square kilometers).
In 1990, Transnistria declared itself an independent country.
A war for Transnistrian independence took place between 1990 and 1992, when a ceasefire was declared.
Transnistria is not recognized as an independent state by Moldova or by any of the other member states of the United Nations.
Moldova considers it to be a Republic of Moldova, known as the Pridnestrovian Moldovian Republic.
The capital of Transnistria is Tiraspol.
About 535,000 people live in Transnistria.
32% are Moldovan, 31% are Russian and 29% are Ukrainian. There are also Poles, Bulgarians, Germans, Jews and Gagauz.
91% of the people are Eastern Orthodox Christians.
Russian, Ukrainian and Moldovan are spoken.
The official currency of Transnistria is the Transnistria Ruble, which is made of 100 kopecks.
