Clipperton Island - Tourism and Travel



Clipperton Island is an uninhabited coral atoll in the Pacific Ocean, southwest of Mexico.

It is a French possession.

Clipperton Island has a total area of 2.3 square miles (6 square kilometers).

Clipperton Rock, a 29 meter high volcanic outcrop, is at the southeast end of the island. The rest of the island is flat.

The climate is tropical.

Tuna fishing in the island's territorial waters the only economic activity.

Clipperton Island has no airstrips and there is no harbor. The island can be reached by a small boat.

It is sometimes visited by ham radio operators.

Clipperton Island is named after a pirate, John Clipperton, who used it as a hideout.

It was annexed by France in 1855. Mexico seized it in 1897.

The island was returned to France in 1935.
