The Dominican Republic makes up the eastern two thirds of the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean Sea.

Haiti makes up the western part of the island.

The Dominican Republic is 18,704 square miles (48,442 square kilometers) in area.

It has a large coastal plain. Further west, there are some mountain ranges and fertile valleys.

There is a tropical climate, with a great deal of rainfall.

The capital of the Dominican Republic is Santo Domingo.

Thee quarters of them are mixed race. 15% are white, and 10% are black.

Spanish is the official language. French Creole is also spoken.

92% of the people are Roman Catholic.

Most of the Dominican Republic's foreign income comes from tourism.

The most important crops are sugar, coffee and cocoa.

There are nickel and gold mines, and some light industry.

The Dominican republic has a presidential system of government.

The peso, which is equal to 100 centavos, is the official currency.
