The Republic of Haiti makes up the western third of the island of Hispaniola, in the Caribbean Sea. The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern two thirds of the island.

French and French Creole are the official languages.

There are few natural resources in Haiti

Main exports are coffee and local crafts.

A large portion of the country's income comes from remittances from workers abroad.

Haiti has a presidential system of government.

The official currency is the gourde, which is equal to 100 centimes.

Haiti was once a French colony. It became in independent Republic in 1804, after a successful revolt of black slaves who were led by Toussaint L'ouverture.
