Isla Aves, a tiny island in the Caribbean Sea, west of the Lesser 'antiles is a dependency of the South American country of Venezuela.
The name Isla Aves means "Bird Island".
Isla Aves is a nesting site for several species of birds and a resting place for many migratory bird species. It is also a nesting site for the endangered Atlantic green turtle.
The island is popular with astronomers and ham radio operators.
Isla Aves is only about 400 yards (375 meters) long.
At its widest, Isla Aves is only about 55 yards (50 meters) wide.
It is only about 4 yards |(4 meters) above sea level at its highest point.
The island is sometimes completely submerged during hurricanes. Severe erosion from hurricanes is causing Isla Aves to disappear gradually.
In 1980, Hurricane Allen split Isla Aves into two parts, but they were eventually rejoined by coral reef growth.
