Martinique, an island in the Windward Islands in the Caribbean Sea, is an overseas department of France.

It has an area of 417 square miles (1,079 square kilometers).

There are beaches and hills in the south of Martinique and volcanoes in the north.

The volcano Mount Pelée is the highest mountain in Martinique. It is about 4,500 feet (1,400 meters) high.

In the center of the island, there is a highly populated plain.

Martinique has a tropical climate that is moderated by trade winds from the east and northeast.

405,000 people live in Martinique. About one fourth live in the capital, Fort-de-France.

French is the official language. Creole is also spoken.

A large proportion of foreign income comes from tourism.

The euro is Martinique's official currency.
