The island of Montserrat is an overseas dependency of the United Kingdom in the Caribbean Sea. It is located in the Leeward Islands, in the Lesser Antilles.

Montserrat has an area of 39 square miles (100 square kilometers).

It is a volcanic island. Most of the island is mountainous. There is lowland on the coast.

Montserrat has a tropical climate and is prone to hurricanes between June and November.

Between 1995 and 1997, eruptions of the Soufrière Hills Volcano in Montserrat caused more than three fifths of the island to be covered in ash.

The capital of Montserrat, Plymouth, was almost completely destroyed and Brades became the temporary capital.

Many people either moved to the north of the island or emigrated altogether.

The United Kingdom has been funding reconstruction of the island.

This was the first time this volcanoes had erupted since 1630.

Montserrat has a population of about 5,000.

English is the official language.

Christianity is the main religion.

The official currency of Montserrat is the East Caribbean dollar.
