Petrel Islands, also known as Bajo Nuevo Bank, is an uninhabited coral reef in the Caribbean.
It is claimed by Colombia, the United States of America, Jamaica and Nicaragua.
The United States claims it as part of the United States Minor Outlying Islands.
Nicaragua claims Petrel Islands because it is on Nicaragua's continental shelf.
Currently, Petrel Islands is under Colombian control.
Petrel Islands is about 16 miles (26 kilometers) long and about 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) wide.
It is made up of two coral atolls that are divided by a channel.
The larger atoll is in the southwest and the smaller one is in the southeast.
Low Cay, in the southwestern atoll, consists of broken coral, sand and driftwood.
A light beacon on Low Cay is operated by Colombia's Navy.
