The Falkland Islands are an overseas territory of the United Kingdom located in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean, northeast of Cape Horn, in South America.

East Falkland and West Falkland are the two largest islands. There are also many smaller islands.

The Falkland Islands have an area of 4,699 square miles (12,170 square kilometers).

Stanley is the capital of the Falkland Islands.  It is located on East Falkland

More than 200 species of bird, including 5 penguin species can be found in the Falklands.  Sea lions, elephant seals, orcas and dolphins live around the islands.

2,955 people live in the Falklands.

Most of them are of British descent.

English is the official language.

67% of the people are Christian.

Sheep farming and the sale of fishing licenses form the bases of the economy.

The official currency is the Falkland Islands pound.

Argentina and the United Kingdom have both claimed ownership of the Falklands. In Argentina, the islands are known as Las Islas Malvinas. In 1982, a war the United Kingdom and Argentina over the Falklands resulted in a British victory. Argentina still disputes the United Kingdom's claim to the islands.
